How the heck...

...do you recover a kids rocking chair?

Seriously.
We have been known to do a furniture transformation or two but anything requiring fabric & upholstery is a bit nervewracking!

So here's the little beauty that is screaming to be released from the early 90's:
...a sweet $4 purchase from Goodwill for my little tyke.  (I KNOW you're thinking I got ripped off! Ha!)

I already have the fabric but getting it ON the chair is a whole other story...
To sew or not to sew?
Staple gun?
Upholstery nails?
Tuck/pin and pray? ;)

My husband suggested a machine washable slipcover and I think diet coke spewed out of my nose when I laughed! HA! Who does he think I am, Ashley the Sewing Goddess from Make It and Love It?!  Silly husband.

So anyway, if you know of any sites and/or tutorials that would be helpful, PLEASE send them my way!  I am going to attempt some piping, which I know is completely suicidal but, I've gotta try.... for the sake of this horrid pattern that needs to go to its grave ;)

Thanks, friends!
XOXO

  1. I will be stalking this post! I have one that needs done too. Mine isn't quite as bad as yours...just super dirty and won't come clean :)

  2. I like the slip cover idea use an old sheet to make a pattern for the slip cover. or if you re-upholster it as you take the fabric off use the fabric as a pattern to use with the new fabric. It really isn't as intimidating as it seems once you get going.

  4. I seen somewhere to put the fabric inside out on the chair, and cut and pin togther to make a slip cover, then you just sew it together where you pinned, it seemed like an easy enough idea....I have yet to attempt it though lol! Good luck!

  5. I have the same style of chair as well that I would love to recover. Thankfully it isn't quite so loud, so we've been living with it as is for quite a while. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

  6. My first thought was to make a machine washable slipcover too! Seriously, it isn't as hard as it sounds (I think). Pin the fabric right-side-in, sew, and turn right-side-out. Heidi from Honeybear Lane recovered her whole couch and did a post on it; you should check it out!

  7. I have no help for you regarding the chair, but your comment about "who does he think I am, Ashley..." seriously made me laugh out loud. :) Thanks for making me laugh today, and good luck with that chair.

  8. How do you find things for so friggin cheap?! I have been looking for a kid lounge chair but can't find one for less than $30, even used!! By the time you buy materials and spend any time recovering it, you're better off to just buy one new. Craigslist in SLC is basically crap because KSL has the monopoly, and anything decent at the DI's up here (goodwill) get picked off in a hurry (at least I've never found anything good at DI). I'm super interested to see how it goes. I'm sure it will be adorable, you guys always so an amazingly cute job! I'm still reeling over your turquoise china cabinet! I've been racking my brain for somewhere in my house that I could do teal furniture, but alas there is none. I'm also still thinking for a way I can incorporate beadboard wallpaper. haha!

  9. I did a kid recliner a few months ago. Its on my blog. I did as many step by step pictures as I could for it, but it still doesn't really explain it. LOL We used all of your suggestions but the sewing maching. Cut, tuck, staple, tack, and repeat. :)

  10. I have a pattern for a chair slip cover you can have. It's a PDF I purchased and never used. It's for the pottery barn/Land of Nod size, but maybe you can alter it a bit? Let me know if you want it. :)
