Cubby system revamp

In sheer desperation to organize my overflowing playroom, I called Kristi over via text message "SOS!" and she came over to help... but got distracted with the kids dressup box!
Oh, Aunt Kristi!

After a trip to Circle K to get Diet Cokes, we got to work for real and within a few hours and a stop at Home Depot we went from this...

...to this!

First things first we hacked off the beat up top {thanks Dad!} with a circular saw, pulled apart the pieces we weren't using and viola!  We really wanted to keep the baskets since they were kinda pricey {$15/each. Yikes.} and this was our simple solution.

We secured the system with 2 L-Brackets, nailed down a a sturdy piece of MDF for the top plus cut out a new hole {for cords} and slapped beadboard on each side.

From that point it was all about trim!
I caulked in between the trim pieces and sanded the MDF before painting.  I would have liked to leave it white but unfortunately this is an Ikea piece we're talking about so we all know ya can't paint laminate! ;)

We could have left the unit raw with painted black top but you could see dowel marks and this way, it looks more like a custom piece.

PS: In case you're curious what's hiding inside Ikea furniture:
Classy, we know!

Overall it took a couple hours of teamwork, about $40 in wood, a lot of paint AND a ton of Diet Coke ;)

  5. I am so excited to see what you did with your ikea storage, I am working on re-vamping mine too! I am about half way done. I never thought about adding molding, great idea!!! I am just re-vamping mine for my craft room... but I am still using the baskets I bought too because just like you said they were so darn pricey I would feel guilty not using them! Anyways SO excited you thought about re-vamping this guy too!

  10. Great re-do! I was wondering if they could be cut down. I know those baskets can get expensive - they better last!
