Birthday Boards

With 9 children and over 30 grandchildren, our parents were going crazy trying to keep all those birthday organized.  We thought we'd help out, the good daughters that we are! ;) We created a way to have all the birthdays in one place while still being stylish & matching our parents home decor...

Introducing the birthday board:

We've been making these bad boys for nearly 5 years but are simply BURNED OUT!  Consider this your warning: this isn't a simple hour long project.  It requires lots of baby steps and just as much patience (:

We've made over 100 birthday boards, here are a few that we loved most:
The great thing is these can be customized to your home decor style.

Here's an up close shot of that popular M&M theme'd board made for our brother-in-law's mom:

How to make your own Lolly Jane Birthday Board:

SUPPLIES
  • 24"x8" wood
  • Acrylic or Spray Paint
  • Vinyl lettering or Stencil
  • Eye hooks
  • Hanging Pieces [wood stars, circles, etc]
  • Note, here is what we prefer: Circles + Stars

Instructions
1. Paint your board & hanging pieces.
2. Apply vinyl lettering on board & hanging pieces.
3. Center eye hooks under each month and screw into wood
[Starting 1" in from left to right, screw 2" apart, 12 hooks total]
4. Screw eye hook into center of each star, top & bottom*
*We've found it's easiest to buy 3/16" eye hooks and open one side with pliers.
*Pre-drill: We used the smallest drill bit from Home Depot. It will help prevent cracking too!
5. Hang the specific hanging piece under each month.
6. Smile knowing you're never going to forget another birthday again! ;)

Updated thanks to all the inquires from Pinterest:
These 2 boards were recently made in bulk.  Instead of the teeny-tiny vinyl lettering names on the hanging pieces, the names were simply printed on cute scrapbook paper then decoupaged in place.

Quick solution and no more headache for all those itty-bitty vinyl lettering names. I promise it's not worth the time cutting + weeding all those names in vinyl, not when scrapbook paper is so cute these days (:

Most asked question:
Do you sell your birthday boards?
NO, we no longer sell the kits but instead shared our tutorial with you.  We've seen tons of copy-cats out there along with girls even selling them.  More power to them, they're so time-consuming! ;)  However...

YES, we still sell the vinyl lettering ONLY for the board itself!

Cost: $15 [free shipping!]
Size: 6 1/2" tall x 24" long
Includes: Any titles + overlay + months
[example: Johnson Family+Established 1981+Jan-Dec]
... and we really recommend printing the names yourself...

  2. Hi! We're unable to write you back since we can't find an email address so hopefully you find this message! (:

I updated the link so you find exactly what we used. Thanks for the comment!

  3. Thank you, That totally answered my question! Of course in starting this I had one more ;)

For the brightly colored birthday board did you hot glue the circles directly onto the board? I love the colors and font on that one.

  4. Ask away! ;)
Yes, we did glue them but found that E6000 is much more durable than hot glue- give it a try :) Thanks!

Where did you get your eye hooks? I can't find them! Are they just called 3/16" eye hooks?

  6. We get ours at Home Depot. They're the smallest size and come in a red and white bag. 8 pcs for 0.99 cents. If I had a bag on hand I'd give you the brand but don't sorry! I think they're smaller than 3/16 actually, 1/8". Hope that helps! (:

  7. This is a weird question...sorry! I love this board but have no idea where I would put it in my house. Where did your parents put theirs?

  8. Last question! :) ... how did you hang it on the wall. is anything attached to the back? I'm almost done with mine!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi! Yes we did hang it- you can attach a large sawtooth hanger from the back and center it and it holds nice & sturdy :)
Send a pic when you're done! Bet it's lookin good!

So the circles are the 1 inch in diameter? That just seems so tiny to fit a name and number on it!

  11. What is the name of the font you used on the board with all the colorful circles. Also, do each of the colors on that board represent a different family? Thanks!

  12. @Jessica: The vinyl is 1" x 1"...tiny I know! (which is why we stopped offering them in our shop). @Bradshaws: Lima Bean font and no, she just did them randomly but that's a cute idea (:

This may be a silly question, but how'd you get the names on the stars? Did you write them? If so, what type of pen did you use?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Nichole, we used vinyl lettering. We have since stopped using vinyl because they're a pain and are so time consuming. Instead we now type it up on Word and print onto cute scrapbook paper then ModPodge into place. Easy (:

  16. Hi girls! I am loving these signs and am getting ready to make one for a gift. Quick question...im having a hard time finding the 1 in x 1 in wooden circles in the store. Did you find them in any AZ stores or did you order them from the site you shared?
Thanks for the help! These signs are great! (and yes, totally time consuming lol)

how did you get the hooks in the circles without them splitting?

  21. Hi, did you make the Utah Ute board with a big vinyl sticker or did you modge podge? Would you happen to have the layout for it? I tried to re-create it and it looks horrible!! Thanks

  22. Hey Rylie,

I made the sticker with my vinyl cutter. Do you have a cutter?? Mine is an industrial so I can cut it in one piece (per color) versus having to only do 12" at a time. I cut all the red at once and the black at once. I can cut it for you if you're still having trouble? Good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ps: @Anonymous: We pre-drill to avoid splitting!

These are too cute! I want to make one for my grandmother for mother's day. Are the starts you used for the months bigger than the star you used for the names? Thanks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, they are bigger. The month stars are 3" and the name/hanging stars are just less than 2"

    (: Good luck!!

  26. you mention that you found it easier to just use eyelets and then with pliers open it to a hook...

but i noticed on some of your pictures (house of payne) it looked like the hooks and eyelets were different sizes?

I also noticed that your hooks and circles arent always facing the same direction.
After making so many boards do you have a preference based on ease of a front facing, back facing or side facing hook opening?

I know that is crazy detailed but that is the kinda person I am LOL

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Terlyn,

You're right..we've experimented with lots of different ways (: It doesn't matter if they're open on top or bottom, no preference there. As far as sizes, the House of Paynes came from Target in an assorted size box so it was more expensive and they were larger which caused more cracking.

We've since used the 3/16" eye hooks from Home Depot, (red brand bag and we manually open them ourselves) and pre-drill too, but we've had the best luck with those. They're $0.99/bag which is pricey too but they work the best as far as we're concerned.

    Hope that helps!! (:
